There’s nothing like a good night’s sleep to set you up for an excellent day. If you have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a CPAP machine might be one part of ensuring you get a restful eight hours.
If you just got your first CPAP machine, take a look at our list of tips to ensure maximum comfort and effectiveness.
1. Start Slow

Many people find CPAP machines uncomfortable initially. When you get your first machine, try wearing it for short periods while you’re awake. You can put it on while watching TV, reading or doing anything else that diverts your attention away from the machine. Wearing it for short periods while you’re awake will help it feel more natural when you go to sleep at night.
2. Set the Stage for Easy Sleep
In addition to using your CPAP machine for short periods during the day, you should also create a good environment to help you fall asleep. Try the following for easier sleep:
- Stop drinking caffeine after noon
- Turn your phone off for at least an hour before bed
- Set the room at a comfortable temperature
- Drink a soothing cup of chamomile tea
- Get a daily workout in at World Gym Beaumont or do a nighttime yoga video
- Don’t eat for at least two to three hours before bedtime
3. Clean Your Equipment
Your CPAP machine requires regular maintenance to prevent the buildup of grime and bacteria. Clean the mask, tubing and water chamber daily. Your CPAP manual will include specific instructions for cleaning your machine.
4. Make Adjustments
Adjusting the mask or trying new sleeping positions will help reduce discomfort. If discomfort persists or you have skin irritation for more than a few weeks, you may need to try a different mask style. 5. Consider a Humidifier
Some CPAP machines come with a humidifier, and others have the option to add one. The humidifier will make the air more comfortable and may help prevent morning dry mouth.
Following the above tips and scheduling regular visits with your sleep specialist will ensure you have the best possible CPAP experience.
