An acoustic neuroma, also known as a vestibular schwannoma<\/a>, is a benign (noncancerous) growth that develops on the vestibular nerve. The vestibular nerve is the connection between your inner ear and your brain that helps you balance. Pressure from the acoustic neuroma can cause a variety of audiological and other symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n

What Causes an Acoustic Neuroma?<\/h2>\n\n\n

Acoustic neuromas have been linked to a problem with a gene on chromosome 22. When functioning normally, this gene produces a protein that suppresses tumors and helps control the growth of the Schwann cells that cover the nerves.<\/p>\n\n\n

What Are the Symptoms of an Acoustic Neuroma?<\/h2>\n\n\n

In many cases, the symptoms of acoustic neuroma develop slowly over time. Eventually, however, they can become severe. Common symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
